John McCain's battle to win conservative votes

If John McCain is to be sure of the Republican nomination, he needs to win over more arch conservatives, both of the fiscal and evangelical variety.

In every primary so far exit polls have showed him losing among those describing themselves as "very conservative".[snip]

He also voted against George W Bush's 2001 tax cuts, arguing that federal spending was not being cut in kind. This is all sacrilege to conservative Republicans.

Rush Limbaugh, the most influential Right-wing talk radio host in the country, said Mr McCain's nomination would "destroy the Republican Party". Evangelical leader James Dobson said he would not support McCain "under any circumstances".

Dobson had his chance. He could have endorsed a strong conservative like Fred Thompson or even Mitt Romney but chose rather to bash them. Now he's faced with a likely nominee that is WAY unacceptable and he can't do a thing about it. You made your bed Dr, now sleep in it.
