South Florida Students Face Indictment for Carrying Explosives Across State Lines

Southern Baptists at it again.

WASHINGTON — Two Egyptian students at the University of South Florida were indicted Friday for carrying explosive materials across states lines and one of them was charged with teaching the other how to use them for violent reasons.

Ahmed Abdellatif Sherif Mohamed, 24, an engineering graduate student and teaching assistant at the Tampa-based university, faces terrorism charges for teaching and demonstrating how to use the explosives.

He and Youssef Samir Megahed, 21, an engineering student, were stopped for speeding in Goose Creek, S.C., on Aug. 4, where they have been held on state charges.

Consumer Spending Rebounds in July

More good news that crAP chooses to spin with negative speculative qualifiers... although worries, but there are worries, however economists cautioned, however if incomes falter etc. etc. etc.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Consumers returned to the malls in July after taking a breather in June, although worries about the future could make the rebound short-lived. The Commerce Department reported Friday that consumer spending rose by 0.4 percent in July, double the June increase. The spending was supported by a solid 0.5 percent rise in incomes, the best showing in this area in four months.

Thompson's Announcement Today?

Lots of buzz on this.

Former Tennessee Senator Fred Dalton Thompson may be announcing his presidential candidacy formally at 4:30 pm EDT today. A reliable source close to Thompson's advisors told HUMAN EVENTS that today would be the actual announcement, not the announcement-of-the-announcement rumored earlier.

Thompson's move may have been accelerated by the August 29 editorial in the Manchester, NH Union Leader that said Thompson's failure to participate in the scheduled September 5 debate would be a snub to New Hampshirites.

Whatever motivated Thompson, the September 5 debate - with him in it - would be much more important than it would otherwise have been.

Update: BREAKING: Fred Thompson will announce his candidacy today at 4:30pm EDT

It's official: Fred Thompson will formally enter the Presidential race today, with an announcement to be made at 4:30pm.

For all who have waited for this for months -- here you go.

He's finally putting his money where his mouth is. Word is that he is making phone calls to supporters as we speak.

Economy Grows at Fastest Pace in a Year

Women and minorities hardest hit etc. etc....

The economy grew at its strongest pace in more than a year during the spring as solid improvements in international trade and business investment helped offset weakness in housing. The gross domestic product, the broadest measure of economic health, expanded at an annual rate of 4 percent in the April-June quarter, significantly higher than the 3.4 percent rate the government had initially estimated a month ago, the Commerce Department reported Thursday.

But the growth spurt could be short-lived. There are concerns that the recent turmoil in financial markets, a result of a spreading credit crisis, could seriously dampen economic activity in the second half of this year.

GDP growth may have slowed to just above 2 percent in the current quarter and many analysts believe growth will slow even further in the final three months of this year as the full impact of the recent market turmoil is felt.

Remember this is crAP and all good news under a Republican administration MUST be tempered with negative speculation.

Survey: Less Than Half of all Published Scientists Endorse Global Warming Theory

Well, what do you know.

In 2004, history professor Naomi Oreskes performed a survey of research papers on climate change. published on the ISI Web of Science database from 1993 to 2003, she found a majority supported the "consensus view," defined as humans were having at least some effect on global climate change. Oreskes' work has been repeatedly cited, but as some of its data is now nearly 15 years old, its conclusions are becoming somewhat dated.Examining peer-reviewed papers

Medical researcher Dr. Klaus-Martin Schulte recently updated this research. Using the same database and search terms as Oreskes, he examined all papers published from 2004 to February 2007. The results have been submitted to the journal Energy and Environment, of which DailyTech has obtained a pre-publication copy. The figures are surprising.

Of 528 total papers on climate change, only 38 (7%) gave an explicit endorsement of the consensus. If one considers "implicit" endorsement (accepting the consensus without explicit statement), the figure rises to 45%. However, while only 32 papers (6%) reject the consensus outright, the largest category (48%) are neutral papers, refusing to either accept or reject the hypothesis. This is no "consensus."

Iraqi Cleric Muqtada al-Sadr Suspends Mahdi Army Activities

Strategic logistic 101....Armies don't initiate ceasefires if they are winning, unless of course, they are controlled by the left in this country. The Mahdi army has taken a beating and desperately needs time to regroup, we should not give it to them.

BAGHDAD — Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has ordered a six-month suspension of activities by his Mahdi Army militia in order to reorganize the force, and it will no longer attack U.S. and coalition troops, aides said Wednesday.

The aide, Sheik Hazim al-Araji, said on Iraqi state television that the goal was to "rehabilitate" the organization, which has reportedly broken into factions, some of which the U.S. maintains are trained and supplied by Iran.

"We declare the freezing of the Mahdi Army without exception in order to rehabilitate it in a way that will safeguard its ideological image within a maximum period of six months starting from the day this statement is issued," al-Araji said, reading from a statement by al-Sadr.

In Najaf, al-Sadr's spokesman said the order also means the Mahdi Army will no longer launch attacks against U.S. and other coalition forces.

Poll: Thompson/Guliani Still Knotted

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson on top of the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination. Giuliani earns 23% of the vote from Likely Republican Primary Voters while Thompson is also at 23%. Mitt Romney is favored by 16% and John McCain is the choice for 11%. Mike Huckabee tops the second tier at 5% (see recent daily numbers).

It appears we have a date certain....Fred Thompson's new campaign manager, Bill Lacy, forces out communications director Linda Rozett and suddenly we have a date for Fred's announcement:

Sources tell numerous outlets that Thompson will announce his campaign September 4th, and that he will participate in his first debate on September 27 at Morgan State University in Baltimore. His first major appearance at a GOP event will be at the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference in Michigan around a week earlier.

IRAN VOWS TO TAKE CHARGE IN IRAQ

From Drudge

A grand miscalculation on the part of Iran. If anything can turn around public opinion on Iraq, this is it.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned Tuesday that a power vacuum is imminent in Iraq and said that Iran was ready to help fill the gap.

"The political power of the occupiers is collapsing rapidly," Ahmadinejad said at a press conference in Tehran, referring to U.S. troops in Iraq. "Soon, we will see a huge power vacuum in the region. Of course, we are prepared to fill the gap, with the help of neighbors and regional friends like Saudi Arabia, and with the help of the Iraqi nation."

Just keep talkin.

Iran protests over Swedish Muhammad cartoon

Oh those silly Swedes. Btw the Swedish ambassador to Iran is a women, bet that burns their beans.

Iran summoned a Swedish diplomat to its foreign ministry on Monday to protest against a cartoon in a Swedish newspaper depicting the head of Prophet Muhammad on a dog's body, Sweden's foreign ministry said.

"Gunilla von Bahr, Sweden's charge d'affaires, was summoned to the Iranian foreign ministry today where she received a protest from the Iranian government," foreign ministry spokeswoman Anna Björkander told AFP.

The Iranian government told Von Bahr the cartoon was "offensive to Prophet Muhammad," Björkander said, refusing to disclose any further details of the meeting.

Iraq leaders reach consensus on some benchmarks

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's top Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish political leaders reached consensus on some U.S. benchmarks on Sunday that are seen as crucial to healing the deep rifts in the country, Iraqi officials said.

Three Iraqi officials said the leaders had signed an agreement that would ease curbs on former members of Saddam Hussein's Baath party joining the civil service and military.

Two of the officials also said consensus had been reached on holding provincial elections and releasing many detainees held without charge across the country.

Significantly more than what the Democrat Congress has achieved during their tenure as majority.

Iraqi PM lashes out at Clinton, other U.S. critics

Maliki has failed in many areas but he's called this one right...

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki hit back on Sunday at Democratic presidential hopeful Senator Hillary Clinton and other U.S. critics who have called for him to be replaced, telling them "to come to their senses."

Maliki is under mounting pressure from officials in Washington to show political progress towards reconciling his majority Shi'ite Muslim sect and minority Sunni Arabs. U.S. officials are frustrated by the negligible progress so far.

Clinton and fellow Democratic Senator Carl Levin, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, have called for Maliki to be voted out because of his failure to find a political solution to Iraq's bitter sectarian violence.

"There are American officials who consider Iraq as if it were one of their villages, for example Hillary Clinton and Carl Levin," Maliki told a news conference

Thompson Wins Surprise Write-In Victory in HRCC Straw Poll

Hundreds of Republican activists gathered at the St. Paul River Center to cast ballots in a non-binding Presidential Preference Straw Poll Wednesday night. The poll was sponsored in conjunction with a House Republican fundraiser and included party leaders, Republican Legislators, Former Republican Lawmakers, party activists and boosters for various candidates.

Iranian Troops Cross Into Iraq, Attack Villages

BAGHDAD -- Iranian soldiers crossed into Iraq on Thursday and attacked several small villages in the northeastern Kurdish region, local officials said.

U.S. military spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Garver said he couldn't confirm the attacks, but five Kurdish officials said that troops had infiltrated Iraqi territory and fired on villages.

The Iranian military regularly exchanges artillery and rocket fire with Kurdish rebels who have taken refuge across the border, but Iraqi Kurdish officials worried that Iran's willingness to cross the border raises the possibility of a broader confrontation that would draw the Iraqi government and U.S. forces into an unwanted showdown.

Unwanted showdown, for whom? For the left and MSM maybe but not for the informed of us who are sick and tired of Iran directly contributing to the deaths of our soldiers.

Democrat Talking Points

Iraq is a disaster.

We're losing in Iraq.

We can't win in Iraq.

The Surge can't work.

The Surge isn't working.

There's a civil war in Iraq.

The Surge isn't working that well.

The Surge is working but Iraq doesn't have a government.

Even if we win in Iraq we can't stay there.

Thanks JB

Incredible Shrinking Deficit, II

Three words....TAX CUTS WORK!

2004: $413 billion 2005: $318 billion 2006: $248 billion 2007: $158 billion

Close readers of this column may recall the top three numbers in the list above from our editorial of July 12, "Incredible Shrinking Deficit." It commented on the mid-session review released by President Bush's Office of Management and Budget, which projected the fourth number, the 2007 federal budget deficit, at $205 billion. Yesterday, the Congressional Budget Office released its own updated estimate for 2007, $158 billion, a deficit even smaller than the White House's July figure. The CBO yesterday also released its latest estimate of the 2007 deficit as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product, allowing us to update another list of deficit numbers:

2004: 3.6% 2005: 2.6% 2006: 1.9% 2007: 1.2%

The More They Know, the More They Like Thompson

Giuliani has been the frontrunner for the Republican nomination since the start of the year, and according to Gallup's latest poll (conducted Aug. 13-16, 2007) he leads Thompson, his chief rival, by 13 percentage points -- 32% vs. 19%, respectively. According to Gallup's analysis of the relationship between candidate familiarity and vote choice over the past three polls, Giuliani is the clear favorite among Republicans who are not familiar with all of the other candidates in the field. He leads this group with 38% of the vote, compared with 18% for McCain, 12% for Thompson, and only 6% for Romney. However, among the slightly smaller group of Republicans who are familiar with all four candidates, the leader is Thompson with 33%. Giuliani ranks second with 25%, followed by Romney and then McCain.

Arizona School Suspends 13-Year-Old Boy for Drawing Gun

Good grief.

MESA, Arizona — Officials at an Arizona school suspended a 13-year-old boy for sketching what looked like a gun, saying the action posed a threat to his classmates.

The boy's parents said the drawing was a harmless doodle and school officials overreacted.

"The school made him feel like he committed a crime. They are doing more damage than good," said the boy's mother, Paula Mosteller.

The drawing did not show blood, bullets, injuries or target any human, the parents said. And the East Valley Tribune reported that the boy said he did not intend for the picture to be a threat.

Iraq: Baathists 'disown al-Qaeda'

No small development this....

Baghdad, 22 August (AKI) - The leader of Iraq's banned Baath party, Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, has decided to join efforts by the Iraqi authorities to fight al-Qaeda, one of the party's former top officials, Abu Wisam al-Jashaami, told pan-Arab daily Al Hayat.

"AlDouri has decided to sever ties with al-Qaeda and sign up to the programme of the national resistance, which includes routing Islamist terrorists and opening up dialogue with the Baghdad government and foreign forces," al-Jashaami said.

Al-Douri has decided to deal directly with US forces in Iraq, according to al-Jashaami. He figures in the 55-card deck of "most wanted" officials from the former Iraqi regime issued by the US government.

What's that sound I hear? Could be heads exploding on the left side of the aisle on Capitol Hill.

Romney Encounters More Core Opposition Than Clinton

Last week we discussed how Hillary Clinton's negatives could preclude her from ever becoming POTUS. It appears that Mitt Romney may very well have a similar problem...

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has finally surpassed New York Senator Hillary Clinton in the polls. Unfortunately for Romney, it’s a poll measuring the number of people committing to vote against him.

The Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 44% of Likely Voters would definitely vote against Romney if he’s on the ballot in 2008. That’s a point higher than the 43% who would definitely vote against Clinton. Only one other possible candidate surpassed Clinton in this category all year (former House Speaker Newt Gingrich who is not considered a candidate at this time).

The continued mud slinging by Romney minions will do nothing but exacerbate this problem.

Inhofe Throws Support to Fred Thompson

Inhofe is a highly regarded Senator among the conservative base and this endorsement should carry some serious weight.

U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe threw his political support to unannounced presidential candidate Fred Thompson today.

Speaking to the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce Tuesday morning, Inhofe said he expects the former actor and Tennessee senator to announce a bid for the presidency soon.

Inhofe said he will support Thompson, when he announces.

Court: Just being in U.S. isn't illegal

While unauthorized entry into the United States is illegal, being in the country after having entered illegally is not necessarily a crime, according to a new ruling by the Kansas Court of Appeals.

In a Barton County case, a three-judge panel issued an opinion Friday that a judge could not deny probation and order jail time for convicted drug dealer Nicholas L. Martinez based solely on the grounds that Martinez is an unauthorized immigrant.

"While Congress has criminalized the illegal entry into this country, it has not made the continued presence of an illegal alien in the United States a crime unless the illegal alien has previously been deported and has again entered
this country illegally," Judge Patrick McAnany wrote for the court majority.

What tortured logic this is. Working under this line of twisted rational a person robbing a bank would only be comitting a criminal during the actual taking of the money. If he gets out of the bank without getting caught he is no longer breaking the law so he would no longer be committing an illegality therefor couldn't be prosecuted. JEEEEZ.

Sens. Warner and Levin Travel to Iraq, Praise Surge Results

The new Iraq narrative, the surge is working BUT.....

WASHINGTON — After a brief trip to Iraq, Sens. Carl Levin and John Warner said Monday they are encouraged by the effects of the recent U.S. military surge there, but their enthusiasm was tempered by concerns about Iraq's political climate.

"We have seen indications that the surge of additional brigades to Baghdad and its immediate vicinity and the revitalized counter-insurgency strategy being employed have produced tangible results in making several areas of the capital more secure. We are also encouraged by continuing positive results -- in al Anbar Province, from the recent decisions of some of the Sunni tribes to turn against Al Qaeda and cooperate with coalition force efforts to kill or capture its adherents," the two said in a statement issued after leaving the country.

"We remain concerned, however, that in the absence of overall national political reconciliation, we may be inadvertently helping to create another militia which will have to be dealt with in the future," the two said.

Apparently the New York Times is concerned as first they deny, then ignore then bury the good news.

Ours was a Jody

This weekend the family and I went out ot dinner at a restaraunt we've heard good things about. The place was out of town and somewhat in the boonies but we thought we better give it a try. The food turned out to be excellent, unfortunately our waiter/waitress was a Pat. Throughout the entire meal and a discussion afterwords we failed to elicit a concensus as to gender. My wife and our one son thought female. Our other son and myself voted male. Who knows. I'm about to the point of calling the owner. But, after all, he may not know either.

Immigration activist who left Chicago sanctuary arrested

Arrested is one thing, deported another. My guess is it will take months if it ever happens at all.

BTW Headline correction... [Illegal] Immigration activist who left Chicago arrested.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - An illegal immigrant who sought sanctuary in a Chicago church to avoid deportation has been arrested in Los Angeles.

That word came this evening from the pastor of the Adalberto United Methodist Church in Chicago where Elvira Arellano (el-VEE'-ruh ah-ray-AH'-noh) had sought sanctuary.

The Reverend Walter Coleman says he was with Arellano when she was detained this afternoon. But he says he couldn't immediately provide other details.

Arellano left the church for the first time in a year to campaign for immigration reform in Los Angeles this weekend.

Expect a screeching Geraldo to be on a TV screen near you.

Update: Well color me surprised!

Unwinnable Hill?

The one persistent and unwavering constant since Hillary Clinton announced her intention to become President of the United States is her negatives. Rasmussen presently puts her at 45%Fav-54%Unfav. This has varied little over the last 12 months.

In addition the total % of people who definitely WILL NOT vote for Hillary stands at 48% compared to 28% who would definitely vote for her. Those are unprecedented negatives for presumptive nominee and never has a person even come close to capturing the White House packing such burdesome opposition.

Think about it, Clinton will have to garner an additional 22% of the vote while giving up less than 3% to the opposition to win. Contrast this with Guliani's numbers - thirty-one percent (31%) say they’d definitely vote for Giuliani while 28% say they’d definitely vote against. Even undeclared Thompson who has spent a dime has far better numbers - Twenty-three percent (23%) will definitely vote for Thompson while 31% will defnitely vote against.

Granted it's early and anything can happen between now and election day. That being said it appears barring some monumental change in attitude, any of the top tier Republican candidates could and would beat Hillary.

Fair Fox a Phony

It's been apparent for months now that Fox News has been shilling for Rudy Guiliani. The latest report by Carl Cameron on Fred Thompson was a velvet gloved hit piece that attempted to portray Thompson as out of touch with Iowans because of his Gucci loafers and golf cart. It was a superficial bit of snarky flotsam that made Fox look out of touch rather than Thompson. One Iowan commented "We are the Midwest not a third world country, we CAN appreciate nice clothes".

Stop the ACLU has the video.

I have no issue with anyone including a cable network pushing a candidate. What I can't abide is one claiming to be fair in one breath and noticeably shilling for a particular candidate the next.

Fox initially chose to ignore Thompson then belittle his chances. Now that it appears he could actually give Julie Annie a real run for his money they have resorted to mindless snarky commentary. Carl Cameron (IMO a suck a$$ of the highest order)has been their messenger of late although all have been complicit with the exception of John Gibson and Neil Cavuto.

We have come to expect this from MSNBC, CNN, and the rest. It's unfortunate that now even Fox won't be playing it straight.

Is Osama bin Laden Dead?

If true one can only hope it was excruciating.

Osama bin Laden, charismatic founder of al-Qaeda, died of typhoid earlier this month in Pakistan, according to a highly classified intelligence brief given to the King of Saudi Arabia and President Chirac this week, and leaked to the French newspaper L'Est Republicain.

The chief of the terror group was known to have been suffering from acute typhoid and seeking treatment in Pakistan in mid-August. This was picked up and tracked by Saudi intelligence services. The same sources, said by the French to be very reliable, believe he later died.

The powerful Pakistani intelligence agency the ISI - at times virtually a parallel government, instrumental among other things in founding the Taliban - has not confirmed the report. "We have no information on Osama's death," a senior Pakistan Interior Ministry official said on Saturday morning.

Edwards to End Investments With Lenders

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, who has called homeownership "the foundation of the American dream," said Friday he will divest his holdings in funds linked to lenders that have foreclosed on Hurricane Katrina victims. "I will not have my family's money involved in these firms that are foreclosing on people in New Orleans," he told the Associated Press.

"I will not have my family's money involved in these firms that are foreclosing on people in New Orleans," he told the Associated Press.

Funny how comfortable he was investing his "family's money" in "these firms" prior to being caught.

BLOOMY: QUIT IT, MITT

August 14, 2007 -- Mayor Bloomberg yesterday told Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to stop picking on the city's immigrants.

"Boy, let 'em come," Bloomberg said of immigrants.

Romney last week referred to the Big Apple as a "sanctuary city" that protects illegal aliens - and did so even when GOP rival Rudy Giuliani was mayor.

Romney vowed to cut funding to cities that protect illegal aliens if elected president.

Romney's dead right on this one. If a city chooses to flagrantly disregard, even promote circumvention of Federal law there should be a stiff price to be paid and that price should be their federal funding.

It's a city's right to choose not to enforce Federal law but it's the Federal governments right to withold funding and that's precisely what is called for here.

P.S. Bloomberg's an imbecile.

Iranians killed by U.S. troops in Iraq

Continued "active" participation by the Iranians will prove to be a very dangerous game.

BAGHDAD, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Three gunmen killed by U.S. troops in Iraq this week were members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards Corps, a U.S. military statement said in Baghdad.

The U.S. Army statement said that in several anti-insurgency attacks this week, a total of nine gunmen were killed. However, in one raid in northeastern Baghdad targeting a leader of the Iranian Guards' foreign fighters known as Al-Quds, three of his aides were killed by U.S. forces, Kuwait's KUNA news agency reported.

The unidentified leader was arrested on suspicion of supplying arms to Iraqi insurgents, the statement said.

Faux Fire

An elderly Iraqi woman shows two bullets which she says hit her house following an early coalition forces raid in the predominantly Shiite Baghdad suburb of Sadr City. At least 175 people were slaughtered on Tuesday and more than 200 wounded when four suicide truck bombs targeted people from an ancient religious sect in northern Iraq, officials said. (AFP/Wissam al-Okaili)

If they hit her house somebody obviously threw them. As you can see she is holding "unspent" cartridges. One wonders whether this is just remarkably shoddy work or willful ignorance on the part of AFP.

Either way it's just more lies from the leftist leaning peacafists of the MSM.

Update: An E-mail informs me that the ammunition appears to the reader as AK-47 cartridges.

No Clear Leader in Ohio for 2008 U.S. Ballot

Way early granted but interesting nonetheless. Always important to remember, as Ohio goes so goes the election.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton is tied with Republican Fred Thompson in the Buckeye State, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 43 per cent of respondents in Ohio would vote for the New York senator in the 2008 United States presidential election, while 43 per cent would back the actor and former Tennessee senator.

In other match-ups, Rodham Clinton trails former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani by one point, holds a three point advantage over Arizona senator John McCain, and has a 12-point lead over former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.

That's surprising.

Rutgers Student Sues Imus, CBS, MSNBC

You may take issue with the term "nappy headed" but after seeing the picture of the Rutgers Women Basketball team it's hard to argue that it's not an accurate description. "Ho's", now that's another matter. It's highly unlikely that any of the players are actually prostitutes although one never knows. Considering that Imus' portrayal was a tongue-in-cheek statement of opinion rather than fact, it's all academic.

NEW YORK -- On the same day Don Imus settled a lawsuit with CBS Radio after being fired for making sexist and racist comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team, his legal troubles with one of the players began.

Kia Vaughn filed a slander and defamation of character lawsuit Tuesday in state Supreme Court in the Bronx the same day Imus settled with CBS Radio in a deal that pre-empts his threatened $120 million breach-of-contract lawsuit against CBS.

Vaughn's lawsuit, believed to be the first by a player in the case, says Imus and his former co-host Bernard McGuirk along with CBS Corp., CBS Radio, MSNBC and other media outlets that broadcast his show are legally responsible for damage done to her character and reputation. There is no dollar amount listed in the suit.

The Scientific Method

I heard a humorous story this morn from a Doctor buddy of mine while discussing "Global Warming", it goes like this:

The Scientific Method

A scientist was showing a colleague how he could make a Grasshopper jump on command. He pulled the grasshopper from his cage put him on the lab table and demanded it JUMP! Sure enough the grasshopper jumped.

He then pulled off one of the grasshoppers legs and again commanded it to JUMP! which it did. Each time he pulled off another leg and although not as well the Grasshopper jumped when ordered.

The Grasshopper was down to one leg but miraculously when commanded to jump still managed to accomplish the feat.

The scientist then pulled off the last leg and ordered the Grasshopper to JUMP!....nothing, again, JUMP!..... nothing.

The scientist then took out his log and wrote

Conclusion: “I have definitively proven that a Grasshoppers hearing appararatus is located in it's legs."

We Got Him......Again

Two heads are better than one.

Baghdad, 14 August (AKI) - The Iraqi military has captured a leading member of al-Qaeda - known with the battle name Saddam Hussein - as he attempted to enter the Shiite holy city of Karbala southwest of Baghdad, an Arab newspaper reported Tuesday.

Karbala's police chief Raid Shukat told the daily al-Sharq al-Awsat that the man was arrested at a roadblock in the outskirts of Karbala on Monday evening.

Shukat did not identify the man by his real name but said that "thanks to intelligence work we immediately knew who he was and that he was trying to organise a terrorist attack in Karbala".

'Saddam Hussein' according to Shukat was responsible for the planning of an attack in April in which 71 people were killed and more than 175 were wounded.

India Charges Anti-Islam Author

A hate crime mentality on steroids.

HYDERABAD, India — HYDERABAD, India — Indian police charged Monday, August 13, a Bangladeshi writer known for her frequent attacks on Islam with offending Muslims after a complaint from a leading Muslim party in this southern city.

"A case was booked against Taslima Nasreen that her anti-Islamic views and writings hurt Muslim sentiments," Hyderabad police official L.K. Shinde told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Under the Indian penal code, promoting "disharmony or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will" between groups on the basis of religion is punishable by up to three years in jail.

Freedom of speech is the first casualty of a Democracy that preoccupies itself with NOT offending the sensibilities of it's minorities.

Public Support Strong for New Immigration Enforcement

Even a larger majority than I would have guessed....

Seventy-nine percent (79%) of American adults favor a proposal requiring employers to fire workers who falsify identity documents. A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that just 9% are opposed while 12% are not sure.

The survey was conducted as the Bush Administration announced a series of proposals designed to crack down on illegal immigration. One proposal would require companies to fire workers if proper documents are not provided by the employee within 90 days. While this proposal has upset some immigrant-rights leaders, most Americans would like to go even further—74% believe that if a person wants to rent an apartment they should be required to provide documents proving they are in the country legally. Just 17% are opposed.

Huckabee's Heft

The most significant circumstance at the Iowa Straw Poll held over the weekend was not that Mitt Romney won with 31% of the vote or that Fred Thompson garnered more support than frontrunner Rudy Guiliani who also sat this one out out, it was the the completely unexpected strength of former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.

Huckabee has quietly been putting on strong performances at the debates, articulating his ideas well and showing surprising quickness on his feet. Unnoticed by many but obviously not by those who matter this conservative darkhorse has developed a following that heretofor has gone under the radar.

I personally have always liked Huckabee although thought as most that he had about as much chance of "breaking out" as all the other bottom tier candidates, none or slightly less than that. Well, I was dead wrong. That's the great thing about politics, there's always a few jaw droppers during the way and this is the first one we've seen so far.

I don't consider Iowa a bellweather this year especially this early in the game but regardless of the significance of this poll, Huckabee has separated himself from the ne're-do-wells at the bottom. He's given the big three warning to adjust their rear view mirrors to keep him in sight, especially Romney and Thompson. Whether or not this was the springboard to vault him into the top tier one thing for sure, his stock as a possible running mate for Romney or Guiliani has gone up 5 fold.

Bush's Iraq troop surge garners surge in polls

The "hurry up an surrender" before positive results surfaced didn't work out too well for the left. They have painted themselves in a corner and the only thing they can do is continue to whine and hope for the worst.

This may be the sign of a new trend, or simply a summer illusion, but the growing accumulation of evidence can no longer be ignored: Could U.S. President George W. Bush's new strategy in Iraq be working?

There are signs that the American public is seeing positive results. Otherwise, it is difficult to explain the results of a Gallup poll, which showed that 31 percent of those asked felt that the infusion of additional troops in Iraq "has improved the situation." This constituted a nearly 10-percent increase. At the same time, there is a drop of nearly 10 percent, from 51 percent to 41 percent, among those who believe that the extra soldiers either have not changed the situation or they have made it worse.

This would also explain a New York Times poll that indicated a rise - a rise! - in the number of Americans who believe that the invasion of Iraq was justified (from 35 percent to 42 percent). This is such an amazing increase that the daily decided to redo the poll just to be on the safe side. The number of those polled who argued that the decision to invade Iraq was mistaken dropped from 61 percent to 51 percent.

New Scandal Erupts over NOAA Climate Data

Garbage in garbage out.....

Weather station data hidden from public; scientists allege government cover-up

The theory of global warming began to explain one simple set of factsm-- surface temperature monitoring stations have shown a roughly one degree rise over the past century. But just where does these temperature readings come from? Most are reported by volunteer stations, usually no more than a thermometer inside a small wooden hut or below a roof overhang. In the US, 1,221 such stations exist, all administered by the National Climatic Data Center, a branch of the NOAA.

Two months ago, I reported on an effort to validate this network. A volunteer group headed by meteorologist Anthony Watts had found serious problems. Not only did sites fail to meet the NCDC's requirements, but encroaching development had put many in ridiculously unsuitable locations -- on hot black asphalt, next to trash burn barrels, beside heat exhaust vents, even attached to hot chimneys and above outdoor grills.

Soon thereafter, a Seattle radio station interviewed the head of the NCDC, Dr. Thomas Peterson, informed him of the effort and quizzed him about the problems. Three days later, the NCDC removed all website access to station site locations, citing "privacy concerns." Without this data (which had been public for years), the validation effort was blocked. No more stations could be located.

Top aide to Al Qaeda leader in Iraq killed

Iraqi soldiers have killed a prominent militant commander believed to be a top aide for the al-Qaeda network leader in Iraq.

An army spokesman told the independent news agency, Voices of Iraq, (VOI) that Mowafaq Yassin, identified as "the right-hand man of al-Qaeda Iraqi leader Abu Hamza al-Muhajir," was shot dead in a firefight on Friday in the province of Badosh, 40 kilometers west of the northern city of Mosul.

Brigadier Mutaa al-Khazraji told VOI "after clashes that went on for 30 minutes the soldiers killed him inside his home." The senior officer said that Yassin was specialized in preparing car bombs used for suicide operations.

Unfortunately his cousin Watdafaq is waiting to take his place.

US public sees news media as biased, inaccurate, uncaring:

The media can be as uncaring as they like it's the bias and inaccuracy that's tough to stomach.

More than half of Americans say US news organizations are politically biased, inaccurate, and don't care about the people they report on, a poll published Thursday showed.

And poll respondents who use the Internet as their main source of news -- roughly one quarter of all Americans -- were even harsher with their criticism, the poll conducted by the Pew Research Center said.

More than two-thirds of the Internet users said they felt that news organizations don't care about the people they report on; 59 percent said their reporting was inaccurate; and 64 percent they were politically biased.

Black journalists to Hillary Clinton: Are You Black Enough

Question to Suzanne Malveaux: Are you Racist enough?

LAS VEGAS — It probably wasn’t a question Hillary Clinton expected to face, even at a national convention of black journalists.

But CNN anchor Suzanne Malveaux, acting as moderator during Clinton’s appearance here Thursday at the National Association of Black Journalists’ annual gathering, uncorked it anyway:

“Are you black enough?” asked Malveaux, echoing a question often asked of rival Democratic candidate Barack Obama, who is biracial. “What makes you a better candidate over a black man representing issues confronting African Americans?”

And the Press wonders why they aren't taken seriously anymore.

All charges dropped against 2 Marines in Haditha killings

John Murtha: "Our troops overreacted [at Haditha] because of the pressure on them, and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood," Murtha said, before calling for U.S. troops to be "redeployed" out of the country. Shameful.

LOS ANGELES – All charges were dropped against a captain accused of failing to investigate the deaths of 24 civilians in Haditha, the Marine Corps announced Thursday. Also, all charges were dropped against Marine Lance Cpl. Justin L. Sharratt, who had been accused of killing three Iraqi brothers in response to a roadside bomb attack in Haditha in 2005.

Capt. Randy W. Stone, 35, a battalion lawyer from Dunkirk, Md., was one of four officers charged with failing to adequately probe the killings.

"It is clear to me that any error of omission or commission by Capt. Stone does not warrant action under the Uniform Code of Military Justice," Lt. Gen. James Mattis wrote.

Earlier Thursday, the Marine Corps announced that charges had been dismissed against Lance Cpl. Justin Sharratt, who was accused of murdering three brothers in the assault.

Bush takes swipe at Congress’s productivity

And rightly so...

Ahead of his departure for Crawford, Texas, President Bush on Thursday took a swipe at Congress for investigating his administration but failing to pass legislation.

“As a matter of fact, I would hope Congress would become more prone to deliver pieces of legislation that matter as opposed to being the investigative body,” Bush told reporters. “I mean, there have been over 600 different hearings, and yet they’re struggling with getting appropriations bills to my desk.”

That's all that Congress is good for anymore, dog and pony shows.

Defrocked (Literally)

FREDERICK, Colo.—A Catholic priest faces an indecent exposure charge after police said he went jogging in the nude about an hour before sunrise. The Rev. Robert Whipkey told officers he had been running naked at a high school track and didn't think anyone would be around at that time of day, a police report said.

He told officers he sweats profusely if he wears clothing while jogging. "I know what I did was wrong," he said in the report.

Whipkey did not return phone messages. His attorney, Doug Tisdale, told the Longmont Times-Call that Whipkey had no comment.

Where do they get these guys?

Reagan Vet to Head Thompson Effort

Excellent choice.

Fred Thompson tapped another veteran of the Reagan era to manage his soon-to-be-announced presidential campaign today, naming former Reagan aide Bill Lacy to replace the top adviser Thompson moved aside last month.

Lacy was a low-level campaign operative for Reagan in 1980 and later served in the White House. He also helped in Thompson's 1994 Senate bid. He replaces Tom Collamore, a former executive for Altria, the parent company of tobacco giant Philip Morris.

The announcement from Thompson Wednesday took pains to avoid calling Lacy a "campaign manager," instead using the term "committee manager." In a statement, Thompson said Lacy will have "full operational control" and will report directly to him.

$100,000 Offered to Prove Global Warming

Safest money on the planet...

As soon-to-be-Dr. Al Gore continues to duck every person on the planet willing to debate him about his unproven anthropogenic global warming theories, one well-known skeptic has put his money where his mouth is.

On Monday evening, the website JunkScience.com, owned and managed by Steven Milloy, announced The Ultimate Global Warming Challenge.

As laid out in this video, entrants are asked the following in order to receive $100,000 while, at the same time, saving Al Gore from looking like one of the biggest charlatans to ever walk the face of the planet:

$100,000 will be awarded to the first person to prove, in a scientific manner, that humans are causing harmful global warming.

Beauchamp Recants

Appears that not only is Beauchamp a liar, he's a chickensh!t as well...

THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned from a military source close to the investigation that Pvt. Scott Thomas Beauchamp--author of the much-disputed "Shock Troops" article in the New Republic's July 23 issue as well as two previous "Baghdad Diarist" columns--signed a sworn statement admitting that all three articles he published in the New Republic were exaggerations and falsehoods--fabrications containing only "a smidgen of truth," in the words of our source.
Separately, we received this statement from Major Steven F. Lamb, the deputy Public Affairs Officer for Multi National Division-Baghdad:

An investigation has been completed and the allegations made by PVT Beauchamp were found to be false. His platoon and company were interviewed and no one could substantiate the claims.

According to the military source, Beauchamp's recantation was volunteered on the first day of the military's investigation. So as Beauchamp was in Iraq signing an affidavit denying the truth of his stories, the New Republic was publishing a statement from him on its website on July 26, in which Beauchamp said, "I'm willing to stand by the entirety of my articles for the New Republic using my real name."

A bit at odds with the New Republics version. Considering their past predilection toward misrepresentation we have a pretty good idea who to believe.

Update: TNR is dissembling and for good reason. The Weekly Standard is standing behind their reporting 100% as they have the facts to back them up

25,000 abandon insurgency: U.S.

Canaries in a coal mine.... these leaders see the writing on the wall and they don't want to be on the wrong side of this thing.

The U.S. strategy to build alliances with mostly Sunni tribal and local leaders has prompted 25,000 of their followers to turn away from the insurgency and at least nominally align with Iraq's Shiite-led government in the fight against al-Qaida.

The number, from the U.S. command in Iraq, represents the first stab at measuring the effectiveness of the tribal strategy. The trend is likely to be a critical part of a report due in September to Congress and the White House by the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus.

''I think it is the most significant thing that's happened in the past couple years,'' said Marine Maj. Gen. Mastin Robeson, deputy chief of staff for strategy and plans for Multi-National Force-Iraq. ''They actually have come to us saying, 'We want to join you, we want to fight al-Qaida.' ''

Race Factors Into Vick Case

Where was the outrage from the black community during protests in favor of the crucifixion of the Duke LaCrosse players? Why did they wholeheartedly support an overzealous prosecutor who did everything in his power to convict the boys in the court of the Press?

The difference between those sporting Michael Vick jerseys and those urging his swift conviction on dogfighting charges is glaring: Vick's supporters are mostly black; his critics are mostly white.

The racial divide emerged early in the case against the Atlanta Falcons quarterback, apparent at rallies filled with cheering and overwhelmingly black Vick supporters and at anti-Vick protests that are noticeably white.

Vick's opponents say the evidence against him is overwhelming. For many black supporters, that judgment evokes uncomfortable questions about race and guilt in America.

Even though the evidence against Vick IS overwhelming nobody in the white community is pronouncing guilt. All anyone should require is a fair hearing of the evidence and a DA who refrains from acting as an advocate for anything but the pursuit of justice. Lacking this appears to be the one thing the Vick/Duke cases have in common.

Iraq: Golden Dome bomber killed

Payback's a MF....

US troops killed the al-Qaida mastermind of the latest bombing at a prized Shi'ite shrine, and at least 13 people died when mortars rained down on their Baghdad neighborhood, official said Sunday.

Haitham Sabah Shaker Mohammed al-Badri was the al-Qaida in Iraq emir of Salahuddin province, and the figure responsible for the June 13 bombing of the Askariya mosque's twin minarets, the US military said in a statement. He died in a US operation east of Samarra on Thursday, though his death was announced three days later.

"Al-Badri was positively identified by close associates and family members," the statement said.

Walking to the shops ‘damages planet more than going by car’

Walking does more than driving to cause global warming, a leading environmentalist has calculated.

Food production is now so energy-intensive that more carbon is emitted providing a person with enough calories to walk to the shops than a car would emit over the same distance. The climate could benefit if people avoided exercise, ate less and became couch potatoes. Provided, of course, they remembered to switch off the TV rather than leaving it on standby.

There's but one inescapable conclusion, we must all commit suicide to completely irradicate human kind for the sake of the earth.

Official: About 100 Taliban militants killed in air strike

Afghanistan happy dance...

KABUL, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- About 100 Taliban rebels including five senior commanders were killed during an air strike in southern Afghanistan, Defense Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi told reporters Saturday.

Foreign troops carried out an air strike in remote Baghran district of Helmand province on Thursday when many Taliban militants were gathering to watch the execution of several persons accused of cooperating with the government, Azimi said.

About 100 insurgents were killed in the bombardment, he said, adding five senior Taliban commanders including Mullah Rahim, top Taliban commander in Helmand, were among the killed.

Amid all the GOP Gloom, the RNC is outraising the DNC

Hmmmmm

Rich Galen, now a Thompson guy, notices that while the Democratic candidates are outraising their GOP rivals by a wide margin, the RNC is outraising the DNC by a considerable margin. In "fundraising for the cycle, the RNC has out-raised the DNC about $45 million to about $28 million. A fundraising edge for the GOP of $17 million." In terms of cash on hand, it's $16 million to $3 million, once you account for the DNC's $2 million in debts.

Beachamp Investigation Concluded

Can you say "Court Martial"?

After a thorough investigation that lasted nearly a week the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division has concluded that the allegation made by Private Thomas Scott Beauchamp, the "Baghdad Diarist", have been "refuted by members of his platoon and proven to be false"

The official investigation the 4th IBCT Public Affairs Office qualified as "thorough and professional" concluded late August 1st. Officials would not speculate on the possibility of further action against Private Beauchamp, nor would they confirm his current whereabouts or status.

Update: And this from Confederate Yamkee:

Col. Steven Boylan, Public Affairs Officer for U.S. Army Commanding General in Iraq David Petraeus, just emailed me the following in response to my request to confirm an earlier report that the U.S. Army's investigation into the claims made by PV-2 Scott Thomas Beauchamp made in The New Republic had been completed.

He states:

To your question: Were there any truth to what was being said by Thomas?

Answer: An investigation of the allegations were conducted by the
command and found to be false. In fact, members of Thomas' platoon and
company were all interviewed and no one could substantiate his claims.

First, Pants Man Loses Case. Next, His Job.

It's rare indeed when a judge who exhibits a complete lack of sapience receives his just deserts but it's truly satisfying when he does.

By the middle of next week, Roy Pearson, the D.C. administrative law judge who sued his neighborhood dry cleaners for $54 million and lost, will receive a letter that starts the process of putting him out of a job.

City sources tell me that a marathon meeting of the commission that reviews the performance of administrative law judges (ALJs) ended last night with unanimous agreement to meet again next Monday to revise and finalize the wording of a letter that will state the panel's doubts about granting Pearson the 10-year reappointment that he has been seeking throughout the last months of his battle against Custom Cleaners and its owners, the Chung family.

White House: Old check found problems with Minneapolis bridge

The light has been switched on, expect the cockroaches to scatter.

The White House said Thursday that an inspection two years ago found structural deficiencies in the highway bridge that buckled during evening rush hour in Minneapolis.

White House press secretary Tony Snow said the Interstate 35W span rated 50 on a scale of 120 for structural stability.

"This doesn't mean there was a risk of failure, but if an inspection report identifies deficiencies, the state is responsible for taking corrective actions," he said. The bridge was 40 years old.

Iraqi Mosul al Qaeda leader killed

Dirtbag down....

( AFP ) - A local Al-Qaeda in Iraq warlord and two of his cohorts were killed in a shootout with Iraqi forces in the country's third largest city of Mosul, the US military said on Thursday.

Iraqi soldiers killed the three militants from the Islamic State of Iraq organisation -- including its leader, Safi, who was touted as the Al-Qaeda in Iraq emir of Mosul -- during the gunbattle Wednesday, a statement said.

The soldiers were conducting operations in northeastern Mosul when Safi and three bodyguards were spotted in a pickup truck.

The military convoy gave chase and pulled the vehicle over. Safi and his security detail jumped out and opened fire on the soldiers. Iraqi troops returned fire and three of the militants were killed, the US military said.

Poll: Number of people identifying themselves as Democrats falls to new low

From Rasmussen:

During the month of July, the number of people identifying themselves as Democrats fell for the fifth straight month. The latest results show that 35.9% of Americans consider themselves Democrats. That’s down from 38.0% at the end of 2006 and matches December 2005 as the lowest number of Democrats recorded since Rasmussen Reports began monthly updates in January, 2004.

Fuzzy Math

It's just a trivial matter but it's irritating and a perfect illustration of the petty bias of the MSM.

Fred Thompson released his fundraising figures for the month of June announcing the figure to be $3.46 million. Every single news source including CBS, NBC, ABC, Wapo, NYT, LA Times, AP, CNN and a myriad of others listed in their reports that Thompson had collected $3.4 million. A few had the chutzpa to round down even further to $3 million. Only Fox accurately rounded the figure up, as we all learned in Middle school math, to the correct $3.5 million figure.

Trivial, absolutely, but it's just another example of the 1000s of lies we have become accustomed to and many cases accepting of from the Press.

Obama might send troops into Pakistan

After last weeks train wreck the Majic Negro is attempting to butch up his image....

WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Wednesday that he would possibly send troops into Pakistan to hunt down terrorists, an attempt to show strength when his chief rival has described his foreign policy skills as naive.

The Illinois senator warned Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf that he must do more to shut down terrorist operations in his country and evict foreign fighters under an Obama presidency, or Pakistan will risk a U.S. troop invasion and losing hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. military aid.

Just a thought but attacking an ally imperfect as they may be who just happens to be a reactive Muslim country with functioning nukes might not be the most prudent course of action.
